Overview

Tracc Civil had been engaged to undertake the construction of the signalized intersection works whilst Quality Traffic Management coordinated the traffic management for the site. There has been a steady increase with development activity in the South Yunderup region which incorporates developments of new residential areas, schools and other area facilities. This has resulted in the need to upgrade the intersection to better manage the traffic growth. All work completed comprised of resurfacing to the MRWA specifications.

 

Scope of work included the following:

• Road widening

• Traffic signal installation

• Upgrade of existing services

• New kerbs and new drainage

• New islands

• Removal of existing drainage services and trees

• Roadway lighting

Project Challenges

• Current traffic estimate is 6000 vpd.

• Repeated vandalism

• Hard clay presented difficulties for drainage.

• Significant existing services

• Overhead power lines.

• Environmentalist Group monitors environmental issues.

Managing These Challenges

• Effective Traffic Management Plans

• Scheduled work to avoid peak traffic periods.

• Traffic control.

• Increased security measures.

• Tracc advised police to monitor speed as a result of speeding. This intersection is considered one of the most dangerous in RAC’s survey of WA roads.

• Tracc Civil revised their methodology and allowed for plate compaction in trenches as proving.
